
We're looking for a Groundsperson to join our small and dedicated team to keep the grounds looking their best!
Newburgh Priory is a family owned and lived-in house open to the public in the summer and hosting weddings and events throughout the year. Situated within the picturesque Howardian Hills AONB on the edge of the North York Moors it comprises of approximately 30 acres of lawns, historic trees planted by royalty, herbaceous borders and includes a beautiful water garden and well-established Walled Garden.
What you'll be doing - main responsibilities
- Maintaining the grounds and gardens of the principal house and small sections of the Estate’s woodland.
- Grass cutting, leaf raking, edging, soil cultivation, digging, forking, mulching, watering, raking, weeding, pruning, bed preparation, hedge cutting and planting new trees, flowers and various plants together with the use of all necessary tools and machinery.
- Weeding with knapsack, hedge cutting with petrol cutter and seasonal pruning with hand tools.
- The use of cylinder and rotary mowers, strimmer’s, leaf blowers.
- Driving small 50hp tractors & trailers, general robot mower maintenance and occasional hired in plant and machinery.
- Ensuring all equipment records are updated after general tool/machine maintenance is completed together with the use, safe handling and storage of all materials, tools, equipment and chemicals in compliance with health safety regulations.
- Assisting the head gardener with planting and maintaining various flower beds, herbaceous borders and shrubberies.
- General basic upkeep of garden related buildings and garden furniture.
- Help the estate property maintenance team from time to time.
Candidate requirements:
- Must have a full driving licence.
- Be an experienced groundsperson/have some horticultural knowledge, keen to grow in the role and have a good broad knowledge of the various duties.
- Work both on your own initiative and as part of a team.
- Approachable and friendly natured as the property is open to the public for weddings, various events and house visits.
- Have adequade fitness levels in order to undertake some of the manual labour required and used to working nearly entirely outdoors throughout the seasons.
- Experience of maintaining tools and basic tractor/machinery checks.
- Spray licence PA1 & PA6.
- Basic chainsaw licence (not essential).
